Dr. Sweetnam’s practice focuses on the treatment of children and families. The goal of treatment is to help family members to find solutions to problems and to create a family environment that enables family members to flourish emotionally, cognitively, and socially. Dr. Sweetnam uses a combination of approaches, including parent coaching, cognitive-behavioral techniques, emotion focused techniques, and an emphasis on identifying and changing problematic patterns of interaction. He treats children and adults. His areas of specialization include childhood disorders, eating disorders, anxiety disorders, and problems of self regulation (addictive behaviors). Dr. Sweetnam was formerly the Director of the Department of Psychology Research and Training Clinic at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. He has also supervised psychologists in training in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
