Dr. Rene Buenzow DNP, PMHNP-BC, APRN-BC

DNP, Board-Certified Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) and Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP)

Dr. Rene Buenzow is a dual certified nurse practitioner. She is board certified in family practice and as a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner. She became a family nurse practitioner and psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner in 2005 and completed her doctoral work in health care policy from the University of Iowa in 2023. Rene approaches her care as client and family centered from a holistic perspective. She understands how positive and negative experiences can shape an individual and have a significant impact on mental health. She believes in offering a supportive approach; meeting clients where they are and working towards individual goals to improve one’s mental health. “Each individual is unique and deserves to be treated as such, with kindness and respect from a collaborative, evidenced-based, and holistic approach.”

Rene accepts clients from childhood to older adults. She has experience working with ADHD, anxiety, depression, mood disorders, eating disorders, trauma, PTSD, bipolar disorder, and personality disorders. Rene provides an initial non-judgmental and comprehensive diagnostic interview to assess an individual’s previous mental health and psychiatric experiences, personal and family history, strengths and areas needing improvement to create a treatment plan tailored for the individual(s) to live their best life. She integrates cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and interpersonal therapy (IPT) into treatment plans to complement initial and ongoing medication management.

Rene’s professional experience ranges from acute care, long-term care, urgent care, primary care, chronic disease management, crisis stabilization, working with marginalized populations (homeless, LGBTQi, incarcerated, undocumented individuals) outpatient care and a variety of other clinical settings.

Rene is board certified by the ANCC. She is an active member of the APNA, AANP, and the ANA Wisconsin Chapter, including Wisconsin Nurses Assembly working with federal legislators in Washington DC to improve health care(ANAI). Rene serves as WNA’s  Board of Director At-Large, Public Policy Member, and Workplace Bullying and Violence Committee member.  She participated in Nurses Day at the Capitol as an organizer and speaker. Rene’s history of advocacy represents her long-term commitment to high quality health care for everyone.
