Denise Calhoun, PhD

Licensed Psychologist

Dr. Denise Calhoun’s approach to therapy is integrative in nature, blending evidence-based strategies and interventions, the exploration and processing of emotions, and attention to the impact of relationships, salient identities, and cultural factors, as they are all related to an individual’s well-being. She views the therapeutic relationship as being one of the most important factors in facilitating effective treatment and strives to build a strong rapport by being authentic, open, and transparent, as well as providing active listening, support, and empathy.

Denise earned her doctoral degree in clinical psychology from the Virginia Consortium Program in Clinical Psychology. She completed her doctoral internship at the Veteran’s Affairs Illiana Health Care System, where she received specialized training in evidenced-based treatments for post-traumatic stress disorder and other trauma-related concerns. She is a generalist by training and has experience working with a variety of presenting concerns, such as depression, anxiety, adjustment disorders, trauma, interpersonal relationships, work stress, as well as identity exploration and gender affirming care. Denise enjoys working with adults of all ages; she particularly enjoys working with young adults and college students, having worked at several different university counseling centers over the course of her training and career.
